Should Men Care About Self-Care?

Self-care is a trendy phrase that has been thrown around a lot in recent times. A lot of men avoid self-care and dump it together with other things that are deemed as feminine, such as spa sessions and makeup. Simply put, self-care is when a person takes an active role to improve their happiness and well-being. Are men not deserving of happiness just as well as their female counterparts?

Why Care

There are many reasons to care about self-care. For one, your mental health will benefit greatly from it. We live in an age of great worry: climate change, social media fatigue, economic timebombs, and more. Without realising, all of this can take a great toll on one’s mental health. So it’s important to find a way to cope and let your mind rest so it doesn’t go into overdrive. Other than that, self-care also helps build up your confidence and self-esteem, as well as nurture a more positive relationship with the people around you.

Besides being frequently mislabeled as “feminine”, another misconception about self-care is that it is a luxurious thing that will have you spending money on spa visits and retail therapy. Self-care is not necessarily about being ballin’ — we blame Parks and Recreation and their #treatyoself catchphrase for this. Self-care is about prioritising your own needs to make sure that you are feeling your best. In turn, you will live and work more productively, thus having a better quality of life.

How to Care

The first step that you can take towards self-care is to learn how to say no. A lot of times we tend to agree to things out of a sense of obligation, or perhaps we’re scared of turning people down. This also applies in work situations when you are burdened with too much work. Learn to recognise when you’re close to burning out so that you’d be able to avoid a breakdown. You can be a hardworking person but remember — you are not a sacrificial lamb — so make time for yourself when you can.

The free time that you have for yourself, use it to either rest or to do something that you genuinely enjoy. Depending on your interests, there are plenty of options for unwinding. If you’re into plants and nature, going for a hike or gardening would be great activities to get your mind off things. Catching up on a good show or reading a good book also counts as an act of self-care, as long as you avoid bingeing — too much of anything is never good.

Another aspect of self-care is as simple as personal grooming. When you put some thought and consideration into your look, it means that you care enough about your appearance. It’s not gross to care about how you look — it’s even more gross if you don't. Trim your fingernails, book a massage session, buy a better shampoo, or shave your beard. Last but not least in your journey towards self-care is to assess your health and fitness levels. As much as you can have a “forever young” state of mind, your body however, might not agree. Sign up for a health screening and get yourself tested. You may or may not have made decisions that affected your body in the past, so make it an annual habit to do a health checkup to make sure that everything is okay. Don’t forget to also keep your mental health in check. If you feel that you have a lot on your mind and need to unload, find someone you could talk to. For something bigger than just stress and the blues, consider getting help from a professional.

Start Caring Now

Self-care is just as important for men as it is for women. You shouldn’t look at it as something that only concerns women. At the end of the day, everyone needs to be taking care of themselves to be able to enjoy a good and happy life. Start caring now and live happier.
