Should Men Care About Self-Care?

Self-care is a trendy phrase that has been thrown around a lot in recent times. A lot of men avoid self-care and dump it together with other things that are deemed as feminine, such as spa sessions and makeup. Simply put, self-care is when a person takes an active role to improve their happiness and well-being. Are men not deserving of happiness just as well as their female counterparts?

There are many reasons to care about self-care. For one, your mental health will benefit greatly from it. This also applies in work situations when you are burdened with too much work. Learn to recognise when you’re close to burning out so that you’d be able to avoid a breakdown. You can be a hardworking person but remember — you are not a sacrificial lamb — so make time for yourself when you can.

The free time that you have for yourself, use it to either rest or to do something that you genuinely enjoy. Depending on your interests, there are plenty of options for unwinding. If you’re into plants and nature, going for a hike or gardening would be great activities to get your mind off things. Catching up on a good show or reading a good book also counts as an act of self-care, as long as you avoid bingeing — too much of anything is never good.

Another aspect of self-care is as simple as personal grooming. When you put some thought and consideration into your look, it means that you care enough about your appearance. Last but not least in your journey towards self-care is to assess your health and fitness levels. As much as you can have a “forever young” state of mind, your body however, might not agree. You may or may not have made decisions that affected your body in the past, so make it an annual habit to do a health checkup to make sure that everything is okay.
